White Cliffs At Beachy Head East Sussex
White Cliffs At Beachy Head East Sussex
Beachy Head near Eastbourne in East Sussex is 162m / 531ft high and the highest chalk sea cliff in Britain. The South Downs Way and other footpaths in the area offer plenty of superb hiking and coastal scenery. The name has nothing to do with beaches but is a corruption of the old French names Beauchef and Beaucheif which mean "beautiful head(land)". The lighthouse entered service in 1902 and was manually operated until 1983, it is now automatic.
