Traditional Fishing Boat and Historic Net Shops Hastings
Traditional Fishing Boat and Historic Net Shops Hastings
These small wooden trawlers used to make up most of the fishing fleet in Hastings, East Sussex. Hastings is home to one of Britain's oldest fishing fleets and the largest beach (as opposed to harbour) based fishing fleet in Europe. The black timber buildings are net shops, built in the the early 19th century and unique to Hastings. They were used to store nets and gear rather than for hanging nets up to dry (they have several floors inside). At the time they were built there was very limited space on the shingle beach for buildings, hence the the tall thin design.
