She was laid up in 1937 and was relaunched after a complete rebuild in 1997.

She was built for businessman William Lawrence Stephenson, MD at Woolworths, and between 1933 and 1936, she won many races and competed with other great yachts such as Britannia, Endeavour and Shamrock V. Velsheda was laid up in 1937 and was relaunched after a complete rebuild in 1997.
Ranger J Class
Ranger was a J-class racing yacht that successfully defended the 1937 Americas Cup, defeating the British challenger Endeavour II 4-0 at Newport, Rhode Island. It was the last time J-class yachts would race for the Americas Cup. Harold Stirling Vanderbilt funded construction of Ranger, and she was launched on 11 May 1937. She was designed by Starling Burgess and Olin Stephens, and constructed by Bath Iron Works.
Adela
Adela with her spinnaker, big red, in Falmouth Bay. The 182ft twin masted schooner Adela was modified and restored by Pendennis Shipyard, Falmouth and launched in 1995, but she dates back to 1903. Originally constructed by John Goodman Fay & Co, Adela was redesigned, engineered and beautifully restored by Dykstra Naval Architects.
Mariette
MARIETTE was built in 1915, and designed by Nathanael Greene Herreshoff for J Frederick Brown of Boston, a successful wool merchant, who raced and cruised her along the North and South Shores of Boston from 1916 to 1927. Renamed Cleopatra’s Barge under Francis K Crowninshield’s ownership, she was requisitioned by the American Navy during the war and declined thereafter. Restored at Cantiere Navale Beconcini in1995, she is owned by Thomas Perkins, of San Francisco, who re-rigged her as original.

St Nicholas (Old Church) Uphill
St Nicholas church is isolated from the village of Uphill, and stands on a rise just south of Weston-super-Mare, with views over the Somerset marshes and out over the Bristol Channel and the ancient Roman port of Axium. The church dates to the Norman period, and features a 12th-century door, chancel, and nave, with a central tower. The nave is unroofed and open to the elements.
Capitan Miranda
Capitán Miranda (ROU 20) is a three-masted staysail schooner of the Uruguayan Navy. Originally acquired by the Uruguayan Navy as a survey ship in 1930, the ship remained in service until 1976 in this role. Destined for the shipbreakers, the vessel was repurposed as a training ship in 1978. Here she is moored alongside Falmouth docks.
Cheeswring Quarry
This granite quarry lies on the southern slopes of Stowe Hill near the village of Minions on the edge of Bodmin Moor. Quarrying started in 1845 and diminished by the early 20th century, however, more recent work occurred as recently as 1984. It has some of the purest quality granite. Today the site is used by rock climbers.
Cheesewring Quarry
The Cheesewring Quarry has taken a huge bite out of the hill on which the rock formation stands. Quarrying began here in 1845 and continued until the early 20th century. The quality of the granite is particularly fine and was much sort after. Granite from the Cheesewring Quarry was even used for cladding during the construction of Tower Bridge in London.
The Rocks at Cheesewring
The Cheesewring is a granite tor in Cornwall, situated on the eastern flank of Bodmin Moor on Stowe's Hill near the village Minions. It is a natural geological formation, a rock outcrop of granite slabs formed by weathering. The name derives from the resemblance of the piled slabs to a cheesewring, a press-like device that was once used to make cheese.
Daniel Gumbs Cave
Daniel Gumb was the most celebrated character to live on the moors near Pensilva. He is best known for his home among the rocks at the Cheeswring, which in Daniel's day was a very remote place indeed. He was born on 14th April 1703 and his main occupation of stone-cutter brought him to the Cheeswring hill where he built his 'house'.
St Mawes Castle
St Mawes Castle is an artillery fort constructed by Henry VIII near Falmouth, Cornwall, between 1540 and 1542. It formed part of the King's Device programme to protect against invasion from France and the Holy Roman Empire, and defended the Carrick Roads waterway at the mouth of the River Fal. The sky has been replaced to add interest.
Mary Mouse Haslar Marina
Trinity’s Lightship was the former LV1 Lightvessel, established in 1946. She was decommissioned in 1993 & sold to Dean & Reddyhoff, Gosport for conversion into Trinity’s Lightship, a bar and restaurant in Haslar Marina and painted green and renamed Mary Mouse II after the director’s wives Mary Reddyhoff and Joanna (Mouse) Dean. The restaurant closed in 2021.
Bonne Nuit Bay
Bonne Nuit, French for ‘good night’ because of its reputation as a quiet and peaceful mooring, is a small natural harbour nestled in the north coast and sheltered by the cliffs towering above it. At low tide, a small sandy beach appears below the pebbles, a perfect spot to build sandcastles, make some beach art or enjoy a picnic.
Portelet Tower,
Most commonly known as Janvrin's tomb the Portelet Tower is situated on a large rock in center of the bay. As legend goes, the french captain was returning to Jersey in 1721 when his ship wasn't allowed to dock as the locals feared plague, as a result he died away from the island and was buried on the small rocky islet.
Lead Me on My Dreams
Fatherland (Vaterland), part of the Berlin Wall East Side gallery -was painted in March 1990, by Günther Schaefer to honour the 50th anniversary of the Night of the Broken Glass when Nazi forces in Germany and Austria destroyed Jewish owned shops smashing their windows. The mural is a protest against extreme regimes and abuse of human rights with a poem by Varda Carmeli (multidisciplinary artist living in Israel) delivering a message of hope for peace.
Oberbaum Bridge, Berlin
This bridge was a symbol of division between between East and West Germany during the Cold War. Armed guards patrolled the border area on the banks of the Spree River as a border area and the Oberbaum Bridge was one of the few crossover checkpoints from West to East. It is considered one of the most beauitful bridges in Brlin. More recently, the Oberbaum Bridge starred in the Hollywood movie The Bourne Supremacy, which was filmed on location in Berlin. The Jewish Museum Berlin
The Jewish Museum Berlin exhibits the social, political and cultural history of the Jews in Germany from the fourth century to the present, explicitly presenting and integrating, for the first time in postwar Germany, the repercussions of the Holocaust. The Garden of Exile and Emigration are the pillars you see in the foregound, remembering those who were forced to leave BerlinT. he sky has been replaced to add drama and interest.
The Jewish Holocaust Memorial, Berlin Germnay
Lightening stirkes beyond the Jewish Memorial in Berlin. The Holocaust Memorial consists of an undulating field of 2711 concrete steles, which can be passed through from all sides. While walking between the columns of different heights and the labyrinthine corridors, visitors may experience a brief moment of disorientation. The sky has been replaced in PS to create a sense of drama.
Downtown Berlin
Berlin, Germany’s capital, dates to the 13th century. Reminders of the city's turbulent 20th-century history include its Holocaust memorial and the Berlin Wall's graffitied remains. The city is also known for its art scene and modern landmarks and is Europes leading ciity for green spaces. A dull sky has been replaced in PS
The Reichstag
This building houses the Bundestag, the lower house of the German parliament. It was opened in 1984, but it was devastated after a terrible fire decades later. Some recovery efforts started in the sixties, but it was until the nineties, after the country’s reunification, that it was fully restored and reopened. The Reichstag has a huge glass dome that gives an impressive 306° view over the urban landscape. A dull sky has been replaced in PS.

Congress Hall Berlin
The Congress Hall, former called Benjamin-Franklin-Halle, was the American contribution to the International Building Exhibition in 1957. It was declared as a gift of America to its close affiliate of West Berlin. It was built on the south bank of the Spree in the eastern part of the Tiergarten. The people of Berlin soon gave the building a fitting nickname: pregnant oyster and today it is also referred to as Trumps smile The sky has been replaced in PS
Bellevue Palace Berlin
Located in the Tiergarten district of Berlin the Bellevue Palace has been the official home of the president of Germany since 1994. Its neoclassical design is beautiful and although it has only been the president’s residence since 1994, it was first commissioned in 1786 as a summer residence for Prince Augustus Ferdinand of Prussia. The surrounding area of this Berlin building is a park which gives the area a nice green space in the city.
The Neues Museum Berllin
A site seeing boat sits outside the Neues Museum. The museum is a listed building on the Museum Island in the historic centre of Berlin. Built from 1843 to 1855 by order of King Frederick William IV of Prussia in Neoclassical and Renaissance Revival styles, it is considered as the major work of Friedrich August Stüler. After suffering damage in World War II and decay in East Germany, it was restored from 1999 to 2009 by David Chipperfield
St Michaels Mount
Saint Michaels Mount is a small island cut off from the mainland of Cornwall by the tidal waters just off Marazion, near Penzance. It is the home of Lord St Leven. One can walk across the cobbled causeway at low tide to visit the shops and wander round the island, spend too long and your return will have to be by boat! This image was taken from the mainland and the sky has been replaced in photoshop.
Motor Vessel Marala
This classic motor yacht built by Camper and Nicholsons has recently been restored to her former glory by Pendennis Shipyard in Falmouth. Oringinally built in 1931 her original owner died before taking delivery, since then she has had only 3 owners in nearly 90 years. She is built of steel and aluminium and accomodates upto 13 guests in 7 cabins.
Gunwen Chapel
Gunwen Methodist chapel is situated in the hamlet of Gurtla, better known as Lowertown and in the shadow of Helman Tor. The chapel stands close to where the three parishes of Luxulyan, Lanlivery and Lanivet meet, beside the Saints’ Way footpath which runs from Padstow to Tywardreath and Fowey. The chapel was built in 1869 the site is associated with William O’ Bryan the founder of the Bible Christians.
Helman Tor
Helman Tor is a prominent hill south of Bodmin in Cornwall that can be seen for miles around. The natural rocky outcrops on the summit were supplemented in early Neolithic times to create what is known as a Tor Enclosure. Such high places were often sacred to pagans and became known as dwelling places of the gods and ancestors. The sky has been replaced to add interest.
Helman Tor Cornwall
On the summit of Helman Tor you can find a logan stone, a huge boulder weighing many tons which rocks when you stand on it. Such stones were once thought to have magical properties and to have been the site of druid rituals. In later times witches were said to gather there and touching a logan stone nine times at midnight was sure to turn you into a witch! From a scientific perspective one can imagine the huge amount of piezoelectricity that must be generated by rocking such a stone and how this could possibly affect consciousness. The vessel DAR MLODZIEZY is a Sailing Vessel built in 1982 (40 years old) and currently sailing under the flag of Poland. Mercedes, a two-masted square-rigged Dutch sailing ship, is one of the newest vessels in the international fleet of tall ships having been built in 2005. The small vessels flanking them add perspective to these huge vessels. Sky replaceed with one of my own images.

Built in 1913, some of her many claims to fame include: three times overall winner of the Fastnet Race; daring rescue of the crew of the Adriana in the 1932 Newport-Bermuda race; was the last sailing vessel to carry the Royal Mail under sail; and overall winner of several Tall Ships Races. She has been operated, maintained and owned by Dauntsey’s School since 1977. Over the last 49 years, with Dauntsey’s students she has sailed 200 miles inside the Arctic Circle; has travelled as far East as St Petersburg in Russia; as far South as Western Sahara and as far West as South Carolina, and has covered in excess of 175,000 nautical miles. Hikers Bar Old Dungeon Ghyll
A unique Lake District Hotel located in the remote and unspoilt Langdale Valley. The Old Dungeon Ghyll Hotel is to be found in the magnificent setting of the Great Langdale Valley. It is the ‘original’ Dale Head Inn and right in the centre of the Lake District. For 300 years the Old Hotel has offered accommodation and sustenance to weary fellwalkers and climbers in the midst of some of the highest mountains in England. Most guests like to call in at the Hiker’s Bar, seen here, first where a selection of real ales provides a just reward after a long drive or a hard day of fell and rock.
La Folie Douce, Val d’Isere
As the very first La Folie Douce to open its doors, the Val d’Isere Folie Douce led the way for partying on the pistes. To this day, it still remains one of the most popular après ski spots in Val d’Isere and is still a table stomping success. High up at 2,400m, La Folie Douce is located at the top of the La Daille gondola with amazing views of the surrounding snowy mountain tops.
Mountain Tops
Beautiful mountains above the famous ski resort of Val d'Isere. Val d’Isère is a ski resort in the French Alps, near the Italian border. With nearby Tignes, it’s part of the Espace Killy ski area. Here, ski lifts give access to sites like the steep Face de Bellevarde, a black-rated piste, and the Grande Motte glacier, known for summer ski runs.

Vauxhall Bridge is one of the most underated bridges in London, it was opened by the Prince of Wales, who later became King George V s in 1906. It is built of granite and steel and is decorated with monumental bronze statues. The apartments offer outstanding panoramic views of the river, Westminster and beyond.

Paignton Pier
Paignton Pier is right in the middle of the resort’s popular promenade, with its golden, sandy beaches and glittering sea. First opened in 1879, the Pier has been attracting and entertaining many thousands of visitors – from those earliest Victorians, with their parasols and straw boaters, to the smartphone generation of today. The Pier was financed by local Paignton barrister Arthur Hyde Dendy and designed by renowned Victorian architect George Souden Bridgman.
Plymouth Hoe
Standing tall on the luscious green-lawned expanse of the Hoe is the iconic Smeaton’s Tower lighthouse. Gaze down at the shoreline and you’ll see the glorious Tinside Lido, open to the public for bathing during the summer months. It is here where Sir Francis Drake, intrepid explorer and local hero, is immortalised in a statue, situated just a few metres from the green where he finished his game of bowls before heading out to defeat the Spanish Armada in 1588.
Sailing Yacht Tectona
Tectona is a gaff ketch and was built by the Calicut Shikpyard in India in 1928. Built as a private yacht, during the Second World War the vessel was involved in Admiralty work and was recommisssioned by Captain Tom Blackwell in 1958, chartered by Alan Villiers in 1962 and became the Plymouth School of Navigation Sail Training Vessel 1964/1980. Later, she was sold to a French owner, and then to a Swiss Charity and was used for sail training based in Barcelona. In 2007 she was bought by her present owners and continues to be used for sail training.
The Mariners, Church Cove
It is recorded that The Mariners originated in part from the early 17th century as three cottages. In the early-mid 1800s the middle cottage became licensed as a public house and was known locally as a 'kiddlewink', or smugglers' beer shop. Noel Coward is understood to have spent some of his happiest days staying at The Mariners which is believed was his inspiration for Room With A View. Indeed there is a small carving of a sailing boat on one staircase with his initials N.C. below.
Lizard Lifeboat Station
A new lifeboat station on The Lizard was built at Kilcobben Cove, east of The Lizard lighthouse. Construction was a major civil engineering project because the station and its slipway were built on a cliff just above the waterline. The station, which cost £90,000, was opened on 7 July, 1961 by the Duke of Edinburgh, who also named the new Barnett-class lifeboat Duke of Cornwall ON952. Due to the steepness of the cliff, a funicular railway carries the lifeboat crew down to the boathouse.
St Wynwallow's Church
St Wynwallow's Church, Landewednack, is the parish church of Landewednack parish in Cornwall, England, United Kingdom. It is the most southerly church in mainland Britain and is situated approximately ten miles south of Helston. It was founded about 600 AD but the present structure dates to the twelfth century.
Tallship Kaskelot
Kaskelot is a three-masted barque and one of the largest remaining wooden ships in commission. The Kaskelot was built in 1948 by J. Ring-Andersen for the Royal Greenland Trading Company, to carry supplies to remote coastal settlements in East Greenland. She is pictured here in Charlestown Harbour, Cornwall
Wathen Wigg Foot Bridge
Wathen Wigg Foot Bridge spans over the River Nene in Northampton, UK. The footbridge opened in 2005. It is named after Rev Samuel Wathen Wigg who is credited with founding the Northampton Saints Rugby Club when, as the curate at St James Parish Church, he took the boys' improvement class and started a rugby team called Northampton St James which later became known as “the Saints”. The bridge is painted in the club colours.
Barn Owl
Barn Owls are birds of prey, hunting and catching small mammals, mostly Field Voles here in the UK. They have some extraordinary specially adapted characteristics to help them hunt for food at night, such as incredibly sensitive hearing and the ability to see movement with very little light.
This Little Piggy went to market
Considered one of Britain’s oldest pig breeds, the Tamworth has a ginger coat, elongated snout and long legs. Known for producing fine bacon, the breed is good to rear in woodland locations and have a placid temperament and active character. Now considered as a vulnerable breed by the Rare Breed Survival Trust, the Tamworth’s numbers have fallen in recent years with less than 300 breeding sows registered in Britain.
Eve of St Mawes
Eve owes her heritage to the pilot cutters of the Isles of Scilly. Rugged and versatile craft built to withstand the rigours of the Western Approaches in comfort and safety; these little ships were fast, weatherly and immensely strong. Built in 1997 by Luke Powell of Working Sail, many people mistake Eve for an old boat; such is the sense of history within her solid new timbers. David Brown Tractors began in 1936 when Harry Ferguson and David Brown entered a partnership to make a small agricultural tractor powered by a Coventry Climax engine at the famous David Brown Park Gear Works in Huddersfield. Very soon David Brown had introduced his own engine and had secretly begun plans to market his own tractor; the writing was soon on the wall for the partnership with Ferguson. Lizard Lighthouse
The Lizard Lighthouse is a lighthouse at Lizard Point, Cornwall, England, built to guide vessels passing through the English Channel. It was often the welcoming beacon to persons returning to England, where on a clear night, the reflected light could be seen 100 miles away. A pencil and texture created from my original image.
Tallship Morgenster
Morgenster was launched in 1919 as a herring lugger “Vrouw Maria” SCH 324 for the fishing company den Dulk. She was built at the shipyard Boot in Alphen. In 1927 she was motorised (200 HP La Meuse) and extended for another 7 meters. There she got her new name “Morgenster”. She continued as a motorised fishing vessel until 1970. Due to certification requirements the owner took her out of fishing. She was sold to Jaq Vrolijk who exploited her in sport fishing daytrips.
St Mawes Castle, Cornwall
St Mawes Castle is an artillery fort constructed by Henry VIII near Falmouth, Cornwall, between 1540 and 1542. It formed part of the King's Device programme to protect against invasion from France and the Holy Roman Empire, and defended the Carrick Roads waterway at the mouth of the River Fal.
Merlin, Goonhilly Earth Station
Goonhilly Satellite Earth Station is the largest satellite earth receiving station in the world with over 60 dishes in total Goonhilly Satellite Earth Station is the world's largest satellite earth receiving station, located on Goonhilly Downs near Helston on the Lizard peninsula. There are over 60 communications dishes, 25 of which are in use, providing a significant proportion of the UK's satellite connectivity. The site also links into undersea cable lines. The first communications dish was Antenna One, otherwise known as Arthur, and was built in 1962 to link with Telstar. It was the first open parabolic design and received the first live transatlantic television broadcasts from the United States. Many of the dishes are named after characters from Cornish legends. The largest dish, Merlin, has a 32 metre diameter & is pictured here.
White horse and Phoenix mine
Phoenix United Mine is a disused 19th century copper and tin mine in Cornwall, England, UK. Heavy metals left over in the soil from the mining operations have allowed mosses and lichens to flourish, and today the site is a Site of Special Scientific Interest, noted for its biological characteristics. In this image a white horse stands motionless with the mine in the background
HMS Tyne
HMS Tyne is one of the three River-class patrol ships built to safeguard the fishing stocks. Her mission? To enforce national and EU fisheries legislation within British Fishery Limits. She is one of the busiest vessels in the Fleet, spending nine out of ten days at sea protecting our fisheries.
All Saints Church Herodsfoot
In the 1840s the little village of Herodsfoot became a boom town. There had been some lead mining nearby for centuries but the engine houses and new shafts appeared on either side of the valley producing tons of lead and also some silver, copper and tungsten, all needed by the new factories in the Midlands. Soon there were bunk houses for the miners, four public houses and a school but no church. So with the encouragement of the rector of Duloe, Revd Robert Scott, it was decided to build a church on the hill above the village in a prominent position to make an impression on the miners.
Coverack Lifeboat Slip
The Royal National Lifeboat Institution (RNLI) stationed a lifeboat at Coverack in 1901 following the wreck of the SS Mohegan on The Manacles in 1898 with the loss of more than 100 lives. ... The station was closed completely in October 1978 following the allocation of a faster boat to Falmouth Lifeboat Station.
Coverack Harbour
The village of Coverack is centred around the harbour, an important part of its history. Constructed in 1724 for the growing pilchard fleet, it is now home to a much smaller number of fishing boats, still retaining its allure with a nod to the past. Due to a particularly bad incident in 1898 when over a hundred lives were lost when the SS Mohegan hit the reef, a lifeboat was launched at Coverack. Active until the early 1970s when it went into a much-deserved retirement and is now home to a wonderful restaurant.
Arthur at Goonhilly
Goonhilly Earth Stations first dish, Antenna One (dubbed Arthur), was built in 1962 to link with Telstar. It was the first open parabolic design and is 85 feet in diameter and weighs 1,118 tonnes. After Pleumeur-Bo dou Ground Station (Brittany) which received the first live transatlantic television broadcasts from the United States via the Telstar satellite at 0H47 GMT on 11 July 1962, Arthur received his first video in the middle of the same day. It is now a Grade II listed structure and is therefore protected.
Pendeen Lighthouse
Pendeen Lighthouse was built by Trinity House in 1900 to guide vessels around the inhospitable shoreline from Pendeen to Gurnards Head, it became automated in 1995. From Cape Cornwall the coast runs NE by E towards the Wra, or Three Stone Oar, off Pendeen. From here the inhospitable shore continues for a further eight miles or so to the Western entrance of St. Ives Bay, the principal feature here being the Gurnards Head, on which many ships have come to grief.
Hanover Cove
The lovely little sandy, but inaccessible, beach at Hanover Cove between and Perranporth. Hanover cove gets its name from a ship of that name which was wrecked here in 1763. The 100ft two-mast square rigger brigantine was on its way from Lisbon with £50 million in gold (in today's money) when she was blown onto the rocks here.
