November Rose

This white rose is the very last to flower in my garden. November time in Aberdeenshire means short daylight hours which can be quite grey, so it is a joy to look out of my studio and see this brave flower blooming despite the cold, wet and dark. Deliberately offset, the picture carries a serious, realistic mood with the darker background , raindrops and blemishes on the petals and the strand of spider web on the leaves.

Sweet William or Dianthus can be annuals, evergreen perennials or sub shrubs with narrow, often greyish leaves and showy flowers that are frequently fragrant , A popular garden plant, its flowers come in many colours from white to darkest red, often in bicolour combinations, with the darker eyes and toothed petals characteristic of pinks and carnations. Here, a beautifully pale pink head of Sweet William flowers is displayed against a black background.

Sea Holly Ghost

Sea hollies or Eringiums are striking plants for a summer border but only thrive where drainage is particularly good. They have large vivid blue flowers with dark green, clearly veined leaves forming a loose rosette at the base of the plant. Eryngiums are very diverse with over 240 species worldwide. I believe this one is Miss Willmott’s Ghost, Eryngium giganteum which produces silver ruffs and bee-pleasing thimbles on silver stem. Textures have been included

Lendal Bridge, York

Lendal Bridge stands on the site of a former rope-ferry where the city walls break for the River Ouse. The bridge connects two medieval towers: Lendal Tower on the east bank and Barker Tower on the west bank. Fun Fact - This was the ferry used by Florence Nightingale when she visited York en route to Castle Howard in 1852. Coloured textures have been added.

Beautiful honeysuckle grows intertwined with a fragrant pale pink rose, both of which flowersat the same time each year. For about two weeks in early summer the garden is filled with the wonderful fragrance of these two stunning plants as thier flowers open.

Tall Marram Grasses sway in the breeze against a lovely blue sky with white clouds. Taken at Forvie Nature Reserve among the sand dunes by the sea. The dense, spiky tufts of Marram Grass are a familiar sight on our windswept coasts. In fact, its matted roots help to stabilise sand dunes, allowing them to grow up and become colonised by other species. This image has a brush stroke effect on it.

An unusual abstract image of branches of Broom. Taken at the edge of woodland at Golden Acre Park near Leeds. As we came out of the darker shaded areas an old wild broom was silhouetted against the light, its branches hanging in pendulous arcs before turning upwards., creating a stunning dynamic of shape. A textured background completes the image.

Old shops have a wonderful atmosphere and this one in Fochabers, was no exception. The wooden shop fittings - counter and shelves - give a warm and timeless ambience as the daylight filters in from the right. On the counter top stand an assortment of storage jars, a cash register and old scales.

Wooden Groynes at the beach in Aberdeen with their charesteristic 'pole' at the end of each one. Wooden groynes are an essential control to keep beaches stable. Although groynes can be made of many materials it is the UK’s wooden groynes that do the job but also add character to the environment. The purpose of a groyne is to stop sand and pebble movement along a stretch of coast. It does this by trapping beach material which helps build up a larger section of beach in front of an area that’s experiencing coastal erosion. They can often radically change a coastline and care must be taken and changes monitored as if you stop movement on one stretch of the beach then yes you build up one area but can starve another.

Did you know? Casks are sourced mainly from the US and Spain, where they have previously been used to age whiskey and sherry. Scotch whisky rules allow repeated use of casks for maturation, the law for bourbon is such that they can only use the cask once. This normally ensures a good onward supplyof casks for the Scotch whisky trade. Securing a supply of them is part of the distillers’ challenge, and getting long use out of them is important too. As the interaction between wood and spirit is integral to the maturation process, smaller casks tend to mature Scotch whisky quicker. By contrast, large casks such as butts, puncheons or port pipes usually require a longer maturation process, often of 15-20 years or more. Effects have been added to this photograph

Walking in a beautiful stretch of young mixed woodland by the coastline of Arbroath in Angus, a shaft of sunlight caught these flowers on an unknown tree - maybe a Chestnut. They swayed to and fro in the dappled light creating a patch of creamy white among the soft greens.

One of several different Iris plants in my garden. These are ' Iris pseudacorus' or Holden Clough with a netted brown pattern on a yellow ground. Quite a striking flower when the sun lights it up. The Dolomites

The Dolomites in Northern Italy form a part of the Southern Limestone Alps. Also known as the Pale Mountains,they take their name from the carbonate rock dolomite, itself named after 18th-century French mineralogist Déodat Gratet de Dolomieu (1750–1801), who was the first to describe the mineral. Amazing views can be had from the top of these mountains.

So lovely to be able to get this close to such an amazing creature. An insect of damp meadows and hillside pastures, the Common Green Grasshopper is widespread in the uplands, but more local and perhaps declining in the lowlands. It is the earliest grasshopper to appear. Textures added.

The famous railway viaduct over the River Nidd at Knaresborough, taken from the castle ruins above the town.Started in 1846, the original viaduct fell down when nearing completion and had to be rebuilt. It was finally ready in 1851.

Flowers of The Cherry Laurel

Cherry Laurel or Prunus laurocerasus is an evergreen shrub, often used for hedging. The flower buds appear in early spring and open in early summer in erect 7–15 cm racemes of 30–40 flowers, each flower 1 cm across, with five creamy-white petals and numerous yellowish stamens with a sweet smell. This photograph, taken in my garden, has a textured overlay.

Overlooking the River Ythan, Aberdeenshire, this stopping place is a favourite place to watch the variety of seabirds who frequent the estuary. The plough lines on the fieldsabove opposite bank show clearlyand add a foil to the horizontals of the water and banks while mirroring the angle of the tree. This slightly stylised image has a subtle canvas texture.

One of the most photographed harbours in Scotland, Crail harbour nestles in the East Neuk of Fife in North East of Scotland. Famous for its seafood, when I was there in January , lobsters were still being brought in by the small boats there. We were very fortunate to have wonderful blue skies and sunshine.

These beautiful wild flowers fill the air with a lovely scent during early summer as they spring up on woodland walks, country verges and wild areas. I first came across it several years ago and now have plenty of it in the garden. Used throughout history in the British Isles, this herb has been utilized for culinary, medicinal and magical properties bringing together a plant that has many uses. Indigo Herbs brings you this aromatic herb in the form of a pure Meadowsweet herbal tea. When brewing this tea you will be able to see for yourself why it has been described as having a smell quite a lot like marzipan or even antiseptic liquid. The name Meadowsweet comes from the fact that it was used as an additive in making of mead. Meadowsweet used to be called 'Medewurte' with the name slowly changing over time. The Druids ranked the herb as one of their most sacred using it ritually as well as medicinally.

The Bridge at Carrbridge

Not far from the Cairngorms in Scotland is the small town of Carrbridge. I's most famous landmark is the old packhorse bridge, from which the village is named. The bridge, built in 1717,is the oldest stone bridge in the Highlands. It was severely damaged in the muckle spate of 1829 which left it in the condition seen today.
