Lisbon taken from the river Tagus. Lisbon is one of the oldest cities in the world, and the oldest in Western Europe, predating other modern European capitals such as London, Paris and Rome by centuries. Julius Caesar made it a municipium called Felicitas Julia, adding to the name Olissipo. Ruled by a series of Germanic tribes from the 5th century, it was captured by the Moors in the 8th century. In 1147, the Crusaders under Afonso Henriques reconquered the city.

Bandstand of Estrela Garden

This bandstand was originally located in the garden of Avenida da Liberdade. With the increase of traffic and the more commercial occupation of the avenue, the bandstand stopped attracting public at the weekend. It was then dismantled and rebuilt in Estrela Garden, where it still stands today. It was designed by José Luís Monteiro, an architect of French training who was also responsible for the Rossio Station’s nave, among other reference pieces. In French style, it is the largest and, arguably, the most beautiful of the Bandstands of Lisbon.

The Central Tejo, built in 1908 and in operation between 1909 and 1972, was a key thermoelectric power plant for supplying electricity to the Lisbon region. Inspired by German and English industrial architecture, you will see the likeness to Battersea Powerstation in London. Central Tejo opened to the public for the first time in 1990 as the Electricity Museum.

In 1981, while digging trenches to install pipes along this street, the Almada Archaeology Center discovered four bread pits, pits dug underground during the Middle Ages to store food, particularly cereals, for preservation. Although archaeological data is very scarce, this area is thought to have been the original population center of the medieval town, formed around the castle. In the Late Middle Ages, these structures were decommissioned, being cluttered with household waste and construction materials, such as crockery, food scraps, stones, and earth. Most of the buildings on this street are Pombaline in style and were rebuilt after the 1755 earthquake.
